CANDYLAND - PALAZZO DELLE ARTI DI NAPOLI
From September 7 to 17, 2018, Cristina Burns’s solo exhibition CandyLand was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli (PAN), in collaboration with the Assessorato alla Cultura e al Turismo del Comune di Napoli. This milestone exhibition presented a multi-room exploration of Burns’s artistic universe, showcasing works from series such as Through the Mirror, Delusional Parasitosis, Urban Fairy Tales, and Glitch.
Thematically described as "sugar-coated nightmares," CandyLand delves into the sharp contrasts between beauty and decay, survival and disillusionment. Each series offered a unique perspective, yet collectively they critiqued the fragility of human existence and the societal obsession with superficial perfection. The exhibition imagined a dystopian world where the kaleidoscopic allure of pharmaceuticals and cosmetic enhancements morphs into a seductive yet dangerous illusion—a lifestyle descending into chaos under the guise of control.
Through her characteristic blend of surrealism and irony, Burns invited viewers into vividly crafted spaces where playful aesthetics masked deeper, often unsettling truths. Each room of the exhibition was a testament to her ability to balance vibrant visuals with sharp social commentary, leaving an indelible impact on the audience.
